Lake Anna holds a strong population of striped bass, and they are a different day out than largemouth. There is less casting and more waiting for the rod to load up, then a hard, fast fight once it does. Stripers move a lot through the year. Here is where they hold and how we catch them, from the cold water peak to the fall top water bite.

Winter

December to February, peak
Cold water pulls stripers together in the mid lake. Downlined live bait and jigging spoons over schools marked on sonar. Some of the biggest fish of the year.

Summer

March to May, peak
Fish chase bait shallow and up the creeks. Live and cut bait around points and flats, with topwater possible on warm, calm mornings.

Fall

June to August, fair
Stripers go deep to find cool, oxygenated water. Early starts and downlines over the channel produce best. Half days beat the heat.

Winter

September to November, peak
The best topwater of the year as stripers push bait to the surface. Casting into breaking fish is fast, visual and a thrill for everyone aboard.

We fish whatever the schools are telling us, but these are the striper methods that produce on Lake Anna through the year.

Live bait on downlines

The bread and butter striper method here. Fresh bait fished at the exact depth the fish are holding, straight down over the school.

Trolling

Covering water with umbrella rigs and planer boards to locate scattered fish, especially through the cooler months.

Jigging spoons

Vertical jigging over schools marked on electronics. A hands on way to put numbers of fish in the boat.

Fall topwater

When stripers corral bait on the surface, casting into breaking fish. The most exciting bite of the year, and one you will not forget.

Striper trips run from a pontoon or bass boat and take up to 4 anglers comfortably, occasionally 5. They are our most group friendly trip, so families and friends can all fish together. Larger parties can book a second boat.
It is our top pick for both. There is less casting than bass fishing, the guide handles the bait and setup, and the bites are strong and obvious. When a rod loads up, we hand it to whoever is closest.
Yes. Stripers are good eating and harvest is welcome within Virginia size and creel limits. Bring a cooler and your guide will help you keep a few for the table.
